Dronabinol (
Marinol®) is approved for two primary uses. The medication can relieve nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy when other treatments have failed. It can also stimulate the appetite in people with
AIDS who are experiencing weight loss due to a lack of appetite. This product comes in capsule form, and is taken anywhere from two to six times a day, depending on the condition it is being used to treat.
In general, this is a safe drug; however, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, psychiatric conditions, or
seizure disorders. Also, make sure your healthcare provider has a complete list of all other medications you are taking -- including nonprescription products. This will help him or her ensure that dronabinol is the right medicine for you.
