Aptivus Side Effects

Vomiting, headache, bronchitis, and fatigue are some of the most common side effects of Aptivus. Rare side effects, occurring in less than 2 percent of people taking the drug, include weight loss, drowsiness, and insomnia. While Aptivus side effects are minor in most cases, you should seek medical attention immediately if you develop high cholesterol, depression, or high blood sugar.

Aptivus Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Aptivus® (tipranavir); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Aptivus. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Aptivus side effects with you.)

Common Aptivus Side Effects

Clinical studies have not evaluated Aptivus alone for the treatment of HIV, since it is meant to be used along with other HIV medications. In fact, the available information on side effects involves studies that used Aptivus plus ritonavir (Norvir®). Therefore, it is difficult to know whether these side effects are actually caused by Aptivus or ritonavir.

In these studies, the most common side effects of Aptivus (plus ritonavir) included:

  • Diarrhea -- in up to 10.9 percent of people
  • Nausea -- up to 6.7 percent
  • Fever -- up to 4.6 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 4 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 3.4 percent
  • Headache -- up to 3.1 percent
  • Bronchitis - -up to 2.9 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 2.8 percent.
