Emtriva Side Effects

Although most people do not experience any problems while taking Emtriva, side effects are possible. Some of the most common complaints reported with Emtriva include dizziness, diarrhea, and headaches. However, because Emtriva is taken along with other HIV medications, it is difficult to tell if the side effects are due to Emtriva or other medications. Be sure to seek immediate medical attention if you notice serious side effects, such as depression or signs of an allergic reaction.

Emtriva Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Emtriva® (emtricitabine). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. When side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Emtriva Side Effects

Clinical studies have not evaluated Emtriva by itself for the treatment of HIV, as Emtriva is meant to be used in combination with other HIV medications. In fact, the available information on Emtriva side effects involves studies that used Emtriva in combination with several other HIV medications. Therefore, it is difficult to know if these side effects are due to Emtriva or the other HIV medications. Based on these studies, the most common side effects of Emtriva (plus two to four other HIV medications) included:

  • Dizziness -- in up to 25 percent of people
  • Diarrhea -- up to 23 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 22 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 18 percent
  • A runny or stuffy nose -- up to 18 percent
  • Weakness -- up to 16 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 16 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 14 percent
  • Coughing -- up to 14 percent
  • Abnormal dreams -- up to 11 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in 3 to 10 percent of people) included:

  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Vomiting
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Nerve problems, such as unusual sensations (like numbness, burning, or tingling)
