Epzicom Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
Epzicom is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Alcohol
Drinking alcoholic beverages can increase the level of
abacavir (one of the components of Epzicom) in your blood, perhaps increasing your risk of side effects. It may be a good idea for you to avoid alcohol while taking Epzicom.
Ganciclovir (Cytovene)
Combining ganciclovir with Epzicom may increase your risk of
Epzicom side effects, particularly side effects that affect blood cells. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your blood counts very closely.
Interferon Medications
Combining an interferon with Epzicom may increase your risk of dangerous Epzicom side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your blood counts very closely.
Methadone (Dolophine, Methadose)
Epzicom may decrease the level of methadone in your blood, possibly making it less effective. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
Ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol, Ribasphere, Virazole)
Combining ribavirin with Epzicom can increase the risk of serious side effects and may make Epzicom less effective. In general, this combination of medications should be avoided if possible.
Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra)
Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole can increase the level of Epzicom in your blood, increasing your risk of Epzicom side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
Valganciclovir (Valcyte)
Combining valganciclovir with Epzicom may increase your risk of Epzicom side effects, particularly side effects that affect blood cells. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor your blood counts very closely.
