Intelence Side Effects

Although most people do not experience problems while taking Intelence, side effects are possible. One of the most common side effects reported with this drug (when taken as part of an HIV "cocktail") is a rash. While most side effects of this drug are minor, be sure to notify your healthcare provider if you develop high cholesterol or frequent infections.

Intelence Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Intelence® (etravirine); however, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. When side effects do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Intelence. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Intelence side effects with you.)

Common Side Effects of Intelence

Intelence has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Intelence, while another group was given a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

It should be noted that clinical studies have not evaluated Intelence alone for the treatment of HIV, since Intelence is meant to be used along with other HIV medications. In fact, the available side effect information involves studies that used Intelence in combination with other HIV medications. Therefore, it is difficult to know whether these side effects are actually caused by Intelence itself or the other HIV medications.

Based on these studies, the most common side effects of Intelence (plus other HIV medications) included:

  • Rash -- in up to 10 percent of people
  • Tingling, burning, or pain in the hands or feet -- up to 4 percent.

Rash occurred in up to 15 percent of children in clinical trials. Diarrhea was also reported frequently in children, although the exact percent of children who experienced diarrhea is not reported in the Intelence prescribing information.
