Isentress Dosage

The standard recommended dosage of Isentress for adults who are taking rifampin is 800 mg twice daily. For those not taking rifampin, the dosage is 400 mg twice daily. You should take Isentress at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your blood. In addition, it is important that you not miss your Isentress dosage, as missing doses can increase the risk of the HIV virus becoming resistant to the medication.

Isentress Dosage: An Introduction

There is only one standard dose of Isentress® (raltegravir). As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Isentress Dosage for Adults

The recommended dose of Isentress for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is 400 mg twice daily. For people taking rifampin (Rifadin®), the recommended dosage for Isentress is 800 mg twice daily since rifampin decreases the level of Isentress in the blood.

The regular tablets (not the chewable tablets) should be used for adults. Notably, the regular tablets and the chewable tablets are not bioequivalent. This means that four 100-mg chewable tablets will not provide the same dosage as one 400-mg regular tablet due to differences in absorption. As a result, the two forms are not interchangeable.

Isentress Dosage for Children and Teens

The recommended dose of Isentress for treating adolescents weighing at least 55 pounds with HIV or AIDS is 400 mg twice daily using the regular tablets. If the child is unable to swallow the tablet, the chewable tablet may be used and will be dosed according to the child's weight.

For children at least four weeks of age and weighing 6.6 to 24 pounds, the recommended dosage is weight-based using the oral suspension (liquid) twice daily. Children weighing 24 to 44 pounds may be given either the oral suspension or the chewable tablets (again, using weight-based dosing). Children who weigh 44 to 55 pounds should be given the chewable tablet. For weight-based dosing, the child's healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate amount based on the child's current weight.
