Drug Interactions With Lamivudine (Cont.)

 
Interferon Medications
Interferon medications may increase the risk of dangerous lamivudine side effects. If your healthcare provider decides that you should take lamivudine with an interferon medication, you should be monitored more closely. You may have to stop taking one or both medications if you develop dangerous side effects.
 
Ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol, Ribasphere, Virazole)
Ribavirin may increase the risk of dangerous lamivudine side effects. If your healthcare provider decides that you should take lamivudine with ribavirin, you should be monitored more closely. You may have to stop taking one or both medications if you develop dangerous side effects.
 
Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra)
Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole can increase the level of lamivudine in your blood. In most instances, this will not cause any problems. However, make to check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Zalcitabine (Hivid)
Taking zalcitabine with lamivudine may make both medications less effective. It is generally not recommended to take these medications together.
