Megace® (megestrol acetate) is a hormone therapy used to relieve symptoms of breast cancer or endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus). Only the tablet form of Megace is approved for this use.
As a palliative cancer treatment, Megace is used to help ease cancer symptoms. It is specifically approved to treat advanced forms of breast cancer and endometrial cancer. Advanced cancer is cancer that cannot be operated on, that has come back after being treated, or that has spread to other areas of the body (metastasized).
Megace cannot cure cancer, but it can help decrease the amount of estrogen made by the body. Because estrogen can stimulate certain cancer cells to grow, this drug may have a direct effect on cancer cells.
