Generic Megace

Generic Megace (megestrol) products are available in the form of tablets and an oral suspension. In fact, the tablets are no longer made in brand-name form and are only available as generics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration tested the generic versions of Megace and have determined that they are equivalent to the brand-name products.

Can I Buy Generic Megace?

Megace® (megestrol acetate) is a prescription hormone medication. The oral suspension form is approved to treat loss of appetite, malnutrition, and extreme weight loss in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The tablets are approved to treat people with advanced breast cancer or advanced endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus).

Megace is made by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. However, brand-name Megace tablets are no longer manufactured. Both the tablets and the oral suspension are available in generic form.

It should be noted that Megace also comes as an extra-strength liquid suspension: Megace® ES (megestrol ES). Megace ES is protected by patents that prevent any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States (see Generic Megace ES).
