Megace and Pregnancy

What Is Pregnancy Category D?

Pregnancy Category D is a classification given to medicines that have been shown to present a risk to the fetus in studies of pregnant women, but may still offer benefits that outweigh the risks the drug presents. A pregnancy Category D medicine may still be given to a pregnant woman if her healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the mother outweigh the possible risks to her unborn child.

Because Megace tablets are used to help relieve the symptoms of advanced breast and endometrial cancer, there may be times when the benefits outweigh the potential risks. This may be the case when other medicines are not available to help reduce the suffering caused by these potentially fatal cancers.

It should be noted, however, that the tablets would be expected to have the same potential risks during pregnancy as the suspension. Women of child-bearing potential should use an effective birth control method to avoid becoming pregnant while taking any Megace product.

Final Thoughts

If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, let your healthcare provider know. He or she will consider the benefits and risks of using Megace during pregnancy before making a recommendation in your particular situation. In general, this medication is not recommended for use in most pregnant women.
