Megace Dosage

Megace is a prescription medicine that comes as an oral suspension or a tablet. The oral suspension is usually taken once a day, while the tablets are taken several times a day. Your specific dosage, however, will depend on the product you are using, how you respond to it, and the reason you are taking the drug, among other factors.

An Introduction to Dosing With Megace

The dose of Megace® (megestrol acetate) your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on several factors, such as:

  • The particular Megace product you are using
  • Why are you taking the medicine
  • How you respond to it.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Megace Dosage for Appetite Loss, Malnutrition, and Weight Loss in People With AIDS

The usual recommended Megace dosage for stimulating appetite in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is 800 mg per day, which is 20 mL per day of the suspension. Doses of 400 mg a day were also effective in clinical trials (10 mL of Megace suspension). Some people may be given this lower dose.

If you are taking Megace® ES (megestrol ES), your dosage will be different (see Megace ES Dosage). Make sure you know which product your healthcare provider has prescribed for you. Regular Megace comes in a 40-mg-per-mL liquid, while Megace ES comes in a 125-mg-per-mL liquid.

Megace Dosage for Breast and Endometrial Cancer

The usual recommended dose of Megace for reducing symptoms of breast cancer is 40 mg four times a day (160 mg over the course of the day). The usual recommended dosage for reducing the symptoms of endometrial cancer is between 40 mg and 320 mg a day, given as several doses throughout the day. It may take up to two months of treatment before your healthcare provider can adequately determine whether the medication is working for you.

Megace tablets, which come in 20-mg and 40-mg strengths, are approved for this use.
