Reyataz Dosage

Reyataz Dosage for Adults (Previous HIV Drug Use)

For adults who have taken HIV drugs before ("therapy-experienced" individuals), the recommended dose is Reyataz 300 mg plus Norvir 100 mg all once daily with food. However, a different dose is recommended if you take any of the following medications that can decrease the level of Reyataz in the blood:

  • Efavirenz (Sustiva) -- Sustiva and Reyataz should not be combined in therapy-experienced individuals.

  • Tenofovir (Viread) -- Reyataz 300 mg plus Norvir 100 mg, all once daily with food.

  • H2 blockers, such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), nizatidine (Axid), or ranitidine (Zantac) -- Reyataz 300 mg plus Norvir 100 mg, all once daily with food, taken at the same time as and/or at least ten hours after the H2 blocker dose. Your healthcare provider may limit how much of the H2 blocker you may take, as well. If you take both an H2 blocker and tenofovir (Viread), the recommend dose is Reyataz 400 mg plus Norvir 100 mg once daily with food, taken at the same time as and/or at least ten hours after the H2 blocker dose.

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec), pantoprazole (Protonix), or rabeprazole (AcipHex) -- PPIs should not be used in combination with Reyataz in therapy-experienced individuals.

Reyataz Dosage for Children

The recommended dose of Reyataz for treating a child with HIV or AIDS depends on body weight and whether or not they have been on HIV medications before. Reyataz is often used along with ritonavir (Norvir) in this age group.

General Information on Dosing With Reyataz

Considerations for people taking Reyataz include the following:

  • The medication comes in capsule form. It is usually taken by mouth once daily.

  • Reyataz should be taken with food.

  • People with liver disease may need a lower Reyataz dosage.

  • Try to take the medication at the same time every day to maintain an even level in your blood.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions about taking Reyataz. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing resistance to the drug, thereby making it less effective.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your Reyataz dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking the drug without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
