Selzentry Side Effects

Although most people do not experience any problems while taking Selzentry, side effects are possible. Some of the most common side effects include upper respiratory tract infections, coughing, and fever. There are also a number of potentially serious side effects of Selzentry that should be reported to a healthcare provider, including signs of an allergic reaction, depression, or liver damage.

Selzentry Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Selzentry™ (maraviroc). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Selzentry Side Effects

Clinical studies have not evaluated Selzentry alone for the treatment of HIV, as it is only approved for use along with other HIV medications. In fact, the information that is available on potential side effects involves studies that used Selzentry plus other HIV medications. Therefore, it is difficult to know whether these side effects are due to Selzentry or the other HIV medications. In these studies, the most common side effects of Selzentry (plus other HIV medications) included:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold) -- in up to 20 percent of people
  • Coughing -- up to 12.7 percent
  • Fever -- up to 12 percent
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain) -- up to 8.2 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 8.2 percent
  • Changes in appetite -- up to 7.3 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 7 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in 2 to 7 percent of people) included:

  • Herpes infection (including genital herpes and cold sores)
  • Sinus infections
  • Joint pain or other problems
  • Bronchitis
  • Constipation
  • Unusual sensations, such as burning, tingling, or numbness
  • Bladder problems
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Hair follicle infections (folliculitis)
  • Eczema or similar skin problems
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Muscle pain
  • Mouth sores
  • Non-cancerous skin growths
  • Genital warts.
