Sustiva Side Effects

Diarrhea, nausea, and pain are the most common side effects that have been reported with Sustiva. Side effects either don't require medical attention or can be easily treated in most cases. There are, however, some potentially serious side effects of Sustiva that should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately, such as high cholesterol or triglycerides, anxiety, seizures, or an allergic skin reaction.

Sustiva Side Effects: An Introduction

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Sustiva® (efavirenz); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. When side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Sustiva Side Effects

Clinical studies have not evaluated Sustiva alone for the treatment of HIV, since it is meant to be used along with other HIV medications. In fact, the available information on side effects involves studies that used Sustiva plus two or three other HIV medications. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether these side effects are due to Sustiva or other HIV medications. Based on these studies, the most common side effects of Sustiva may include:

  • Diarrhea -- in up to 14 percent in people
  • Pain -- up to 13 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 10 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 9 percent
  • Fatigue -- up to 8 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 8 percent
  • Insomnia -- up to 7 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 6 percent.

Other common side effects (occurring in 2 to 5 percent of people) included:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Abnormal dreams
  • Abdominal pain (stomach pain)
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite.
