Viramune XR Dosage

Viramune XR Dosage for HIV/AIDS in Children

Viramune XR is approved for use in children as young as six years old. A healthcare provider will calculate an appropriate dosage based on your child’s body surface area (which is estimated using your child’s height and weight).
To help minimize the risk for skin rashes, it is necessary to start with 14 days of regular, short-acting nevirapine (Viramune®). This is called the "lead-in period." The dosage will vary, depending on your child’s body surface area, but should not exceed 200 mg once daily.
If your child has not had a rash after taking this medicine for 14 days, the healthcare provider can switch the child to an appropriate dosage of Viramune XR.
If your child is already on short-acting nevirapine, he or she may switch to Viramune XR without the 14-day lead-in period. If your child stops taking Viramune XR for 7 days or more, you may restart the drug only after another 14-day lead-in period.

General Information on Taking Viramune XR

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Viramune XR include the following:
  • Viramune XR comes in an extended-release tablet that is taken once a day.
  • You must swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or dissolve them.
  • You can take a dose of Viramune XR with food or on an empty stomach. If the drug bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
  • Try to take your dosage at the same time every day to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. It is very important that you closely follow your healthcare provider's instructions about taking this drug. Missing doses can increase the chance of the virus developing a resistance to Viramune XR, making the drug less effective.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to dosing with Viramune XR, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
