Viramune XR Side Effects

Although most people do not experience any problems while taking Viramune XR, side effects are possible. Some of the most common side effects include a rash and liver problems. In some cases, these common reactions can be potentially dangerous. Report any signs of a rash, fatigue, swelling of the face, or other potentially serious problems to your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Viramune XR Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Viramune® XR™ (nevirapine XR) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Viramune XR. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Viramune XR

Viramune XR has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Viramune XR were documented and then compared to those that occurred in another group of people taking Viramune, a short-acting version of the drug. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared between the two groups.

In these studies, the most commonly reported Viramune XR side effects included:

  • A rash -- in up to 3 percent of people
  • Liver problems, such as hepatitis, jaundice, or liver failure -- up to 2 percent.
