Viramune and Pregnancy

Viramune and pregnancy are generally considered to be a safe combination. The medicine did not appear to cause harm to the fetus during animal studies, but regardless, it should only be given to pregnant women if a healthcare provider believes that the benefits outweigh any possible risks. If you are taking Viramune and pregnancy occurs, notify your healthcare provider immediately.

 

Viramune and Pregnancy: An Overview

Viramune® (nevirapine) is a prescription HIV treatment. Based on animal studies, Viramune is probably safe for use during pregnancy.
 

Viramune and Pregnancy Category B

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category B is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but do not appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.
 
However, it is important to note that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. Therefore, a pregnancy Category B medicine should be given to a pregnant woman only if a healthcare provider believes that the benefits to the pregnant woman outweigh any possible risks to the unborn child.
 

Viramune and Pregnancy: Summary

If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant while taking Viramune, let your healthcare provider know. He or she will consider both the benefits and risks of Viramune during pregnancy before making a recommendation for your particular situation. Be sure to seek early prenatal care, as women with HIV or AIDS need special care, both for themselves and for their babies.
