Viramune Dosage

The initial starting Viramune dosage for the treatment of HIV or AIDS in adults is 200 mg once daily for 14 days. After that, the dosage is increased to 200 mg twice a day. For children, Viramune dosing is determined by the child's age and weight. Viramune should be used in combination with other HIV medications, as part of an HIV "cocktail."

Viramune Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Viramune® (nevirapine) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking
  • Your age
  • Your weight (for children).

As always, do not adjust your Viramune dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Viramune Dosing for Adults

The recommended Viramune dose for treating adults with HIV or AIDS is 200 mg once daily for the first 14 days, then 200 mg twice daily thereafter. Viramune should be used in combination with other HIV medications, as part of an HIV "cocktail" (this is known as highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART).

If you are undergoing dialysis, you will need an extra Viramune dose after each dialysis session.

Viramune Dosing for Children

For children age two months to up to eight years old, the recommended dose of Viramune is 4 mg per kg of weight (about 1.8 mg per pound) once daily for the first 14 days, followed by 7 mg per kg (about 3.2 mg per pound) twice daily thereafter. For children eight years old and older, the recommended dose is Viramune 4 mg per kg (about 1.8 mg per pound) once daily for the first 14 days, followed by 4 mg per kg (about 1.8 mg per pound) twice daily thereafter.
